Musicians wanted for August event in Guernsey

06 Feb

Hello,

Please forward to others who may be interested:

I am looking for established or bespoke music acts to take part in an event in August.

The vision is to stage several acts in one night in front of an audience seated at tables with drinks service. This will give local or locally connected musicians another opportunity to play on an entertaining evening to an appreciative audience. I will also be looking for someone to host the evening and introduce acts etc.

I deliberately avoid suggesting a genre or format – I can only rely on you to provide the raw material around which to build a great evening. My only request is that your set should be professional quality and entertaining. The audience will purchase tickets before the event and as such the musicians will be paid a modest fee.

If you are interested and want more information please email me: chris@christaylorguitar.gg

Many thanks,

Chris Taylor

The Rock Garden Guernsey

18 Jan

Flicking through issue two of The Gallery Magazine I found this picture of me playing the opening night at The Rock Garden, Fermain.

The Rock Garden – charming staff and a very classy venue. I didn’t get a chance to taste the food (always a problem when I’m playing!) but it looked excellent.

Thank you to The Gallery Magazine for sweeping my up amongst their paparazzi shots.

My first review

09 Jan

A review by Lester Queripel after I played at the Guernsey Poetry Club on 27th December 2011:

“CHRIS TAYLOR WAS OUR GUEST MUSICIAN AND WHAT AN ABSOLUTE TREAT IT WAS LISTENING TO HIS MUSIC AS HE PERFORMED FRETBOARD GYMNASTICS ON HIS GUITAR. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO FOLLOW HIS FINGERS SO I CLOSED MY EYES AND LISTENED TO THE MUSICAL PATTERNS HE WAS WEAVING. DURING HIS VERSION OF ‘YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND’ HE EVEN PLAYED HARMONY TO THE MELODY. AMAZING.”

Thank you Lester!

Welcome Drinks at Castle Cornet

09 Aug

Natalie and Joel’s wedding party made the effort to climb to the highest point of Castle Cornet for their Welcome Drinks in July. The views were stunning. I grabbed this shot whilst looking out for coaches of guests. I had played the Castle for the very first time the night before at “Castle Nights”.

Problem creating Lilypond score from TablEdit

19 May

I have recently got started with ‘TablEdit’ and ‘Lilypond’ music notation editors. One feature of TablEdit I would like to use is the ‘export in Lilypond’ format. I have encountered a problem which I hope is only down to my inexperience with both software packages. The files below demonstrate my issue.

I created one bar of music notation in 6/8 time with TablEdit. This bar has dotted crotchets as part of the middle voice. I save this TablEdit file and export to lilypond format which gives me the .ly file. When I generate the pdf file from lilypond, some of the dotted crotchets are missing. What am I doing wrong?

This is the bar that I’m trying to convert from TablEdit to Lilypond:

Book Live Music in Guernsey

11 Apr

Live music is a special treat that we don’t see often enough. It’s a luxury that a host can provide for guests and makes an occasion memorable.

Thank you for visiting my website. I play solo instrumental Jazz, Latin and Classical music on a Spanish Guitar. A demo can be heard on my music page. I am very passionate about the music in my repertoire and a considerable amount of preparation goes into my set.

I have been back in Guernsey since Christmas 2009 and have played the following: weddings, hotels, cafes, birthday parties, charity balls, club nights, bank functions, a champagne breakfast, Miss Guernsey and Glastonbury (sorry had to chuck that in). Please have a look at my homepage for a full listing.

I enjoy the challenge of arranging new pieces for solo guitar, so if you have a special request please let me know in advance.

I use the minimal amount of equipment. Generally my footprint is just the space for a chair and a speaker stand. Occasionally, at very quite events, I would be able to play un-amplified but in my experience this is rare.

Please contact me and ask for a quote.

Amalio Burguet ABF Mixta Review

06 Apr

My current guitar is an Amalio Burguet ABF Mixta. I bought the guitar personally from Amalio whilst he was on a visit to Oxford, UK. The guitar is a beautiful Spruce top with all the standard features as described on the website. This is a hybrid flamenco – classical guitar, which is perfect for my style, although I wouldn’t dare try and play flamenco in public! The guitar is number 14-2005, handmade by the Luthier with the ‘B’ initial passing through the headstock.

It goes without saying that I am very happy with the quality of the sound, predominately, this is a ‘Latin’ sounding guitar. It is extremely well balanced through the bass and right up into the highest tones. It is not designed for the concert platform but the instrument is perfect for my wedding, hotel and party gigs. I particularly like the smaller fretboard surface to back of neck distance and the golpe protector that is so well fitted you wouldn’t know it was there without looking very closely.

When playing, I quickly worked out the action was too low for me; any firm or medium rest stroke caused the strings to rattle against the fretboard. So, I had the action raised by Christopher Dean a Luthier of fine concert guitars in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. I would’ve had the action higher still but Chris pointed out that it wasn’t possible to make the slot in the bridge deep enough to grip a taller saddle – essentially because the guitar was designed to be low action in the first instance.

Christopher Dean also fitted a Fishman SBT-C pickup for me. I amplify the guitar this way, with entirely outboard electronics and no extra holes necessary. I have a separate blog post on how to amplify a classical guitar.

I am 188cm tall and as such I find the body of a classical guitar too small, especially as my preference is to sit with the guitar on my right knee, like a steel string player. I make the surface of top of the guitar artificially larger by fitting a ‘Guitarest’ from De Oro music and an arm rest from Liikanenguitars Guitars

The small sound file on my Music page is all recorded on the ABF Mixta, with the SBT Fishman pickup, through a Fishman preamp and then line-out from an AER amp directly into the soundcard of my laptop running Audacity.
